How Much Car Insurance Do You Actually Need?

March 12, 2025 · 7 min read

Most drivers carry only their state's minimum liability — and most state minimums haven't been raised in decades. A single ER visit can blow past a $25,000 bodily injury limit before lunch.

Start with liability, not collision Liability protects everyone except you. If you have any savings or income worth protecting, carry at least 100/300/100 (bodily injury per person / per accident / property damage).

Match collision to your car's value If the annual collision premium exceeds 10% of your car's value, drop it.

Don't skip uninsured motorist One in eight U.S. drivers is uninsured. UM/UIM is among the cheapest coverage you can buy and the most likely to save you in a serious crash.
